Douglas Sigurdson

November 14, 1938 - June 24, 2013

Tribute

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Doug after a short battle with cancer. Survived by his wife Dianne; daughter Jody; son-in-law Dario and grandson Ante. Doug was an amazing man with many accomplishments in his life. President of ILWU local 514 from 1976-2002. Doug was a great leader, loyal NDP supporter, avid golfer and wine maker. He always looked for the good in people and assisted the less fortunate that needed a voice. Doug was a true friend to those who had the pleasure of being close to him. The last few years of Doug's life were compromised from heart surgery, a hip replacement, and battling colon cancer – but Doug always found joy spending time and spoiling his grandson Ante Douglas. Doug passed away peacefully on June 24th – which was his 41st wedding anniversary…what a bitter sweet gift. Thank you Doug for 74 great years with us – Your voice was always heard and your cause always made a difference for the better. You will be missed and always loved by many. Celebration of life will be held Saturday, July 20th, 2013 at 3pm at the Operating Engineers Hall, 4333 Ledger Street, Burnaby. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.bakerviewcrematorium.com

He was a man who changed the lives of so many for the better. He sacrificed much , believed his convictions, and followed through on what he said. We all know we are better off for having him in our lives.
Our hearts go out to his family for their loss, but hope there is some solace in knowing that he did change the world for the better.
He walked tall, carried a big stick, and had an even bigger heart.
I wish we could give back some time to his family for all the time he spent on us.
It is with sincerest sympathy we send this message

So sorry about Mr. Sigurdson’s passing. I did not know him personally, but knew of him because of all the support and work he did for the ILWU that I also belonged to for many years. He will surely be missed. Sending my sympathy and heartfelt thoughts to his family. Sincerely, Sharon Sims

Diane and family,

My deepest condolences. Douglas was a great man who I really admired for his hard work and dedication to the union movement, and through his many years involved in Burnaby politics.

Rest in peace Doug!

I would like to offer my condolences to the Sigurdson family for their loss. I had the privilege of serving on seven negotiating teams with Doug and I learned a great amount from him as he was certainly the master negotiator. His unsurpassed dedication to the ILWU, particularly Local 514 will be remembered forever and he will be sorely missed.
Sincerely Jeff Thomas.

From: Doug Godard

We (my daughters Rena, Cherie and I) are sorry for your loss. I am a member of 514 now and I thank Doug for making Local 514 a great and respected place to be. He was dedicated and had a great sense of humour. We will miss him.
Doug

Dianne,
Cedna and I are very saddened at the great loss that you have suffered and wish to offer you and the family our sincerest condolences.
We all know Doug was a man of principle and very dedicated to the cause of social democracy. I shall never forget that he fell and broke his hip in installing my campaign sign in front of the office that he knew like the palm of his hand. He was a fighter and we shall all miss him.
