Vivian Janet McLaughlin (Holms)

October 27, 1922 - August 11, 2018

Tribute

Passed away peacefully on August 11 in Maple Ridge, BC with her family by her side. Born in Calgary, only child of James and Jeannette Holms, Vivian grew up in Dalemead at the CPR Station. .After attending local schools, she trained and graduated as an RN Class ’44 Calgary General Hospital. Marrying James McKinnon in 1945, they farmed in the Dalemead area and were very active in the community until moving to Calgary in 1958. While living there Vivian joined the Daughters of the Nile becoming Queen of Sakkara Temple 115 in 1966. With country life still calling they moved to Pritchard, BC in 1967, operating Green Acres ranch, a division of LK Ranches. There they spent 20 years together and had a wonderful time hosting many family and friends until Jim’s passing July 1986. Marriage to Les McLaughlin in 1989 found them moving from Coldstream to Penticton and enjoying life there until Les passed away September 1992.

Vivian adopted the motto “live, laugh, love” and had a smiling presence that lit up a room. She loved to travel with family and friends and had numerous adventures travelling worldwide. She especially enjoyed those Mystery Tours!  She was a devoted and active member of Oasis United Church in Penticton and volunteered with Penticton Hospice Society.

She is survived by her loving family, Heather (Ian), Janet (Bernie), step-children Tom (Dorothy), Catherine (Ian), grandchildren Andrew (Rachel), Colin (Stephanie), Stuart (Ryan), Constance, Adrienne, Celeste (David), Matt (Ginnie), Emily (Jeremy), 11 great-grandchildren as well as many other beloved friends and extended family members.

Relation: Friend, congregational member

During Vivian’s memorial service, I enjoyed singing her carefully chosen pieces of music and hearing your family stories.

I left the service wishing that someone from Oasis (me?) had shared a few stories about how important Vivian was to our church family.

Up for an adventure, in 2008 Vivian embraced the direction of our new congregation and became an important elder at Oasis.

She gave of her time by visiting people connected to Oasis—shut ins and those in the hospital. She helped document our congregational history by creating beautiful scrapbooks. She attended many of our potluck meals and shared yummy salads and treats.

We saw her playful spirit when she dressed up for the hat party and the English film nights. Seeing her belly dance at her 90th birthday party was a highlight for all of us.

She showed her commitment to exploring her faith by attending study groups and centering prayer. I had the great pleasure of being in a book study with her. She contributed her ideas and experiences, and she encouraged others to share theirs too.

One of my last encounters with Vivian was about her commitment to stewardship. Because she was a generous supporter of our congregation, I invited her to speak for a few minutes at a worship service about her generous spirit. Unfortunately, in the days leading up to that service, her health prevented her from participating. The moment passed, and soon she was in care and not attending our weekly services. Even though we didn’t hear her words that day, her generosity spoke for itself—through her years with us and with the legacy gift she left us after her death.

Our dear Vivian! She blessed us with her love and laughter. Such a gift to us! She is missed!
