Tribute
Ralph Gordon L Smith born September 15, 1934 in Vancouver BC passed away April 22, 2020 at the age of 85 after a short stay @ the Christine Morrison Hospice in Mission BC.
Ralph grew up in Vancouver and attended John Oliver High School. He lived a big part of his life in Richmond BC where he worked for the Telephone Co for 24 years. He was a fast pitch player for the Telephone Co & then went on to pitch in other leagues. He was an avid bowler and was inducted into The Hall of Fame. He soon became a Bowling Proprietor and ran several bowling alleys in Richmond & Ladner until he retired. This is where he met his wife & partner Beverly Day (Founder of OWL) and they lived together for 32 years. They were living in Aldergrove BC when Bev suddenly passed away February 20, 2020. Ralph’s heart was truly broken and he soon followed to be with his soul mate. Ralph is survived by his son Terry Smith and daughter Rhonda Kell (Darryl) and his two grandchildren Kevin Smith and Samantha Kell. He is also survived by his brother Richard (Marilyn) Smith and their sons Michael and Dale. He is predeceased by his mother Pearl (Ladds) and father Harold. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. He will be sadly missed by all his family and friends.

It’s hard enough to loose parents or family members in normal times but extra hard during this pandemic. We cannot be together to comfort and help you through this difficult time but you know we are there in heart and mind. These two were perfect for each other; both forces of nature in their way and a great balance for each other. I’d like to recount some things I remember from childhood about him.
My uncle was always there for my family when we kids were little. When my parents divorced he looked out for my mother and us kids (as did my aunt). I remember a terrible terrible storm in the early 60’s that I’ve since become aware was one of if not the worst Vancouver has had. We were terrified that night, it was wild and horribly windy and raining torrents and our roof was leaking like crazy. He came over in the night and patched us up enough to get by. I don’t know how he did it. With Bev he physically built so much of OWL’s facilities having a large part in the success of the rescue and threw himself into that endeavor wholeheartedly. He will always remain like a second father to me and he will be missed. Love to all.
