James Andrew Logan

February 25, 1934 - February 1, 2017

Tribute

Jimmy passed away suddenly at home in Mission on February 1, 2017 at the age of 82.  He was predeceased by his son Keith in 2007 and his sisters Martha Holmes, Isa Moody, and Sadie Bennett.  He is survived by his daughters Barbara (Allen) Hagen, Sandra (Geoff) Pinkerton and Jennifer (Shane) King; his daughter-in-law Deborah Logan; his grandchildren Daniel, Jayme and Kiefer Hagen, Ryan (Kat), Keighla and Brett Logan, and Michael and Derek Pinkerton; great grandchildren Ryleigh, Danikka and Mads Logan; former wives Irene Logan and Carol Logan; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews in Scotland.

Born in Galashiels, Scotland, Jim and Irene immigrated to Calgary with their infant son Keith in 1958 but Scotland never left his heart.  He formed Logan Graphics and was involved in the printing industry for most of his life.  He played the drum in various Scottish Pipe Bands and attended the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.  He was adept at reciting the Address to the Haggis at the annual Robbie Burns Night fundraising events with the Canadian Cancer Society.

Jim recently retired from being President of the Mission Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society where he was involved since 2006.  He was very active with the Canadian Cancer Society and he was a volunteer driver taking cancer patients to and from their appointments.  Jimmy was always on the go, had a cheerful spirit, and will be fondly remembered by all who met him.  He loved dogs and dog walks, family and friends.

He will be forever missed and always loved.  A celebration of life for Jim will be announced at a later date.

Donations in Jim’s name are greatly appreciated to Mission Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society.

Jim Logan was my best friend’s dad growing up as a teenager. He was a lot of fun and I have great memories of him taking us skiing and taking Jenn and I to her dance competitions. To Jenn and her sisters, I am so sorry for your loss. All my love to you.

Jimmy will be forever in my heart. We had so many laughs volunteering together. My condolences to his family. I hope you know how much I will miss his sharp wit and great sense of humour. Volunteering won’t be the same without Jimmy.

Sincerely Wendy Logan

I met Jimmy dog walking at Heritage Park. What struck me most about him was the genuine friendliness and warmth that emanated from him. Whenever I ran into him, he was upbeat and it was a pleasure to hear his soft Scottish brogue.
My sincere condolences to Jimmy’s family and loved ones.

Dear Barbara, Sandra, Jennifer and Deborah,
I was so sorry to see in the Vancouver Sun, February 21, 2017, the obituary for your father. Great memories came flooding back. What a great friend, excellent technician and hard worker – a wonderful person, with a ready joke and smile for everyone.
In response to an ad I put in The Scotsman in Edinburgh, your Mom and Dad arrived in Calgary from Scotland in 1957, and we had a terrific friendship and work relationship. My wife Betty and I happily attended his 65th birthday party. It was wonderful to see your extended family at that great event.
I hadn’t seen Jim since he came to Betty’s memorial in 2014, but we spoke on the phone regularly, most recently at my invitation to our Jan.28th Gung Haggis Fat Choy party, which would have been the 3rd Robbie Burns event for Jim, if he had been feeling up to it. He told me of his plans to make his dramatic address to the haggis at the successful Cancer Society Burns Dinner he organized, shortly before he passed away.
I have so many wonderful shared memories of Jim, as do the many Duffoto folks in Calgary that worked with him. Do let me know when the memorial service is planned. I would very much like to attend. Please accept my sincere condolences to you and your families. I’m sure going to miss the 1st mate.

Our family in Scotland were shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Jim. He was a real character with a great sense of humour. Latterly he did so much for the cancer Society in Mission and worked tirelessly and no doubt cheered everone up that he helped and worked with. We kept in touch by FB and it was nice to see his posts about his love of Burns nights. He was so enthusiastic and positive in his outlook. I will always remember the last time he was in Scotland and the lovely time we all had together.
i have lots of memories and my earliest is when I was 7 and he left to go to Canada. His mother, my Granny and his sisters always spoke about ‘Oor Jim’. I always enjoyed his visits back to Scotland with his family and especially when he played with the Pipe band in the Tattoo. Good memories.
Our condolences to all the family
Joyce, Derek Hall and all our family in Scotland.

I am saddened to have learned of Jimmy’s passing. I have fantastic memories of him addressing the Haggis on Robbie Burns Day, and standing along-side him at the Mission Legion Remembrance Day wreath laying ceremonies. I will miss his delightful Scottish accent.
