Edward Grant Swaren

September 25, 1939 - July 16, 2019

Tribute

Just over two months short of his 80th birthday, Ed passed away peacefully at the Christine Morrison Hospice in Mission with his family by his side. He was a devoted husband, amazing father to 3, super grand-dad to 5, little brother to his 3 surviving siblings and friend to many.

Ed was born in Galahad, Alberta on September 25, 1939 to Nels and Ollie Swaren. “Sir Edward the Last” (as he often called himself) was the youngest of seven children.  In 1942 the family moved to Mission, BC where he spent his formative years.  As a child, he could never have known the impact this move would make on his life; he became an integral part of this town on many levels.  In high school Ed thrived on sports. He played everything he could, from baseball to volleyball and he had a special talent for basketball and track and field.  In his graduation yearbook, “Eddie” was described as “Mission’s all-round athlete.” His keen interest in sports would lead to a lifelong passion for all things athletic. If he wasn’t playing golf or curling, he could be found watching them (or hockey) on TV.

Ed was also an accomplished student and a passionate learner. He graduated from Mission Secondary in 1957 and went on to get his two-year teaching certificate at UBC.  At the young age of 19, he started teaching in Prince George and then in France. He returned to Canada and finished his bachelor’s degree and then in 1972, set off on a two-year adventure with his young family where he eagerly took on the job of principal of the Canadian Forces Base high school in Baden, Germany.  Upon his return, he went back to Prince George where he raised his family and worked as a school principal and as an administrator in curriculum development.  In 1978, he earned his Master of Education degree at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA.  In 1980, he moved back to Mission, and continued his career in Maple Ridge as the Assistant Superintendent of Schools until he retired in 1996.

In Mission, Ed took pride in contributing to the community by volunteering on committees including one for the BC Games. He was also known to make his voice heard at the city council or in letters to the editor when he was concerned about an issue in his town.

Ed loved to travel and this was something he and Jen, his soulmate and wife, did often. From Mexico, to Hawaii, Asia, Europe, Australia and New Zealand they had so much fun discovering the world.  Wherever the travels took him though, he would happily return to his hometown of Mission to take walks along the dike and play a round or two at his beloved Mission Golf and Country Club.

Above all Ed cherished his family and will be sadly missed by Jennifer, his wife of over 52 years, and their children and grandchildren: son – David (Cristina), daughters – Leanne (Shawn) and Carolyn (Rick), and grandchildren – Ben, Julianne, Sam, Vance and Cabe.  He will also be fondly remembered by his brother Howard (Leona), sisters Leona and Vera, and a multitude of in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.  Ed was predeceased by his parents Nels and Ollie Swaren, his brothers Floyd and Willard, and his sister Emily.

Online condolences may be made at bakerviewcrematorium.com. A celebration of his life will be held on August 10, 2019 from 2:00-5:00pm in the banquet room at the Best Western hotel at 32281 Lougheed Hwy, Mission BC.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada or the Mission Hospice Society.

Our heartfelt condolences to Jennifer and family. Ed was indeed a special person, He was a good friend and supportive colleague who at all times conducted himself as a gentleman. Ed was a caring person who always represented the “light of reason” in a room. He will be missed on the golf course and curling arena. Our deepest sympathy to Jen, Leanne, Carolyn, David and family (the “Swaren clan”).

Relation: Just a very familiar face and a very kind face.

I want to send my condolences to Mr. Swaren’s family and many relatives. I had to look up this man because his face looked so familiar to me and now I can see why. He made a presence in our community. I must have seen him in the local papers or even in person. He seems to have had a very full and diversified life and he will definitely be missed by those who knew him.

From: Edward (Ted) and Faythe Killough
Relation: For several years Ed was Assistant Superintendent and I Superintendent of School District # 42

Jen and Family,
I am deeply saddened to learn of the recent passing of wonderful “Gentleman Ed,” assuredly one of the most impressive colleagues and finest persons I had the privilege of walking alongside during several very special years as fellow professionals in Maple Ridge -Pitt Meadows School District. Always the exemplary teacher, his first thoughts were for students and learning opportunities for each to experience excitement, challenge and success. Ed was an accomplished leader and administrator as well; consequently, support and encouragement for teaching excellence was his other priority. He was an inspired contributor while working with others and outstanding when pursuing challenging tasks on his own. With a bright smile, a timely story, a bit of humour, a little cheer, Ed often brought a positive change to things at just the right moment!
Ed also was one with manifold admirable personal attributes. He sincerely cared about those he worked with and people and issues “on the outside,” most especially his beloved immediate and extended family and community issues close to his heart.
Jen and all, Faythe and I send our deepest condolences. We also pray your knowing that we too miss him very much may in some small way help to ease your sadness and pain.

From: Sair Linda Killy
Relation: Grade 7 student in Duchess Park Junior High School.

Mr. Swaren was one of the best teachers in my high school years. He gave us such a sense of possibility, treated everyone with respect. I became a teacher/ counsellor in part because he brought such goodness into our Junior High School. He was not much older than some of the Grade 9 students ( his first year if teaching at 19). All these years layer, I am glad to have known him and been taught by him. Thank you Ed Swaren for all you gave to your students.

From: Linda Machmer (formerly Jorgensen)
Relation: I was Assistant to the Superintendent at the School Board in Prince George

My husband Tom and I wish to send our sincerest condolences on the passing of Ed. I worked at the School Board in Prince George during the time Ed was principal. He was always such a gentleman and so well respected by his colleagues. We also had the pleasure of meeting him again at the Mission Golf and Country Club and at the curling rink where he always had a pleasant smile and warm welcome to everyone who made his acquaintance. He will be sorely missed.

Dear Jennifer and Carolyn: I was so saddened to hear of Ed’s passing. Gerry, my husband, passed away shortly after midnight on July 8th, the day after his 75th birthday. I am not sure if you are still in Mission, but I have joined a widow’s group which meets at the Hospice House across the street from the hospital. I was wondering if you would like to join us on Thursday from 10:00 am – 11:30 am. I find it is helping to hear other’s stories and how they are coping with their loss and grief. My heart goes out to you. Blessings to you and Carolyn. If you ever want to talk, or just come over for tea and a visit, you may contact me on my cell – 604-854-4919.
