Doreen Junk

October 12, 1944 - June 21, 2020

Tribute

With great sadness we inform you of the loss of our beloved Sister, Sister-in-law, Aunt, and Mentor Doreen Catherine Junk. With the help of her medical staff and the care of her family she battled multiple aggressive cancers for many months. Doreen passed in peace and comfort at Laurel Place Hospice on Sunday, June 21.

Born in New Westminster on October 12, 1944, to parents Anton and Eleonore Junk she is survived by her sister Pat, brothers Ron and Maurice, sister-in-law Kim, five nephews, one niece, two great nephews, and three great nieces.

Doreen’s life was dedicated to education. She obtained a BEd from the University of British Columbia, MEd from the University of Oregon, and worked as a teacher and principal for 42 years in the public and catholic school systems. Doreen conducted Math Their Way workshops in numerous cities across North America and Europe. Even after retirement, Doreen volunteered countless hours to future generations of school children.

As an active member of St. Bernadette Parish, Doreen was often involved in the CWL, RCIA, Parish fundraisers, and social events. She loved quilting, sewing, camping, hiking, and travelling with family and friends. Doreen proudly participated in two medical mission trips to Vietnam and completed the 769km Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. Doreen was a source of strength and compassion for her family and community and will be greatly missed.

Following public health regulations we will be having a funeral for immediate family only on Saturday, June 27 at 11:00am (PDT). We will be live streaming the funeral service on the St. Bernadette Church Surrey BC YouTube channel, https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJ57CwGGP5KLW14cYLVIMZA

I’d like to extend my prayers & sympathies to the Junk family for the loss of their beloved Doreen, a sister, aunt, friend. I’ve known her since 1986 when St. Bernadette school opened, & my daughter was in her first kindergarten class. She was a remarkable teacher & principal, always spoke in a calm voice. She made learning fun, her students were unaware that she was teaching them math concepts. She was a good friend & mentor. May she Rest In Peace.

From: Maria Stokovac
Relation: Attended school with her at UBC and attended her math workshops.

So very sad to hear about the Loss of an amazing and dedicated Teacher and Principal.
Will miss her positive and cheerful character.

From: Pat McCutcheon
Relation: I met Doreen when we were teaching in Dawson Creek, she was a true friend in our professional and personal lives.

Doreen was such a special lady who enriched so many lives. I will miss her lovely smile, her Christmas letters, her family news, and her dedication to her belief system. She will be missed by many and it is her strength that will help us to always remember her. To her family – take heart in that you are so privileged to have Doreen in your lives. She is gone – but not forgotten. With my sincerest condolences to all – Pat McCutcheon

My heartfelt condolences to the family for the loss of your dear sister Doreen, aunt & friend. I’ve known Doreen since the first year the school opened at St. Bernadette; my daughter started Kindergarten and I volunteered and then later worked at the school with her. She was a remarkable, well respected and loved person. May she rest in peace in the comfort of the Lord. God bless you all; you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I was recently thinking of Doreen as I was driving past Teapot Hill in Cultus. She was “in training” for her pilgrimage on the Camino in Spain. Lots of memories during my kids school years. Thanks for all your dedication Doreen. Many prayers coming your way!!

Rest In Peace Miss Doreen Junk! I have fond memories of you as a little girl. You were always so friendly to all of the neighbours. As a university student, working towards my teaching degree, you didn’t hesitate to invite me into your classroom to volunteer and always had such amazing words of encouragement! You were a woman of strong faith❤️💞 The St. Bernadette community will miss you terribly 😢

Dear Pat, Ron, Maurice and families. Our deepest sympathy of the loss of your sister and aunt Doreen. Though we didn’t see each other often I have fond memories of our times together, both as a child when we drove out to BC and spent time at your place in Cloverdale and as an adult when Audrey, myself and my four year old son David were invited to Doreen’s for a “family party”. David, the only child there, was treated royally by everyone and left with a full belly of pop and chips!
I believe the last time we had a chance to visit with Doreen was in Saskatchewan shortly after my husband Art and I married. I can’t remember the event, some extended family gathering, where Doreen shared how she was taking one of her precious nieces or nephews with her on a road trip, something she did with each one when they reached a certain age. I thought ‘How marvelous is that to spend time traveling with Aunt Doreen.”
She will indeed be missed. Our hearts and prayers are with your family. Janet and Art Postle (Saskatoon)
