Tribute

Dirk Sybrand Doornberg passed away peacefully at Mission Memorial hospital on June 6, 2019.

Dirk was born on May 2, 1935 in Malang, Indonesia; the youngest of the 4 children of Gustaaf and Maria Doornberg (Westerman-Holstijn). He is predeceased by his older brothers Hans and Gus. After the end of WWII, Dirk’s family returned to Holland where he completed his degree in business. He emigrated to Canada in 1957 and met Anna while visiting friends in Vancouver in 1958. They married in 1959 in Edmonton, Alberta, and eventually settled on the West Coast in 1966.

Dirk is survived by Anna, his wife of 59 years, his 3 children: Maurits (Miriam), Eric (Eleanor) and Lucy, and his 6 grandchildren: Mathieu, Anna, Marissa, Jacob, Michael, and  Johanna. He was a caring and devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Dirk’s great passion was his family, and he dedicated many of his post retirement years to researching and writing about his family and the family history. His motto: “To know the past is to understand the present”. He also loved playing games, especially Mahjong!

He will always be remembered for his kindness and his deep love of life and family.

Celebration of Life to be held on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at Bakerview Community Crematorium and Celebration Centre: 34863 Cemetery Avenue, Mission, British Columbia.
