Tom Alfred Everett Thomas Hanna

March 2, 1926 - November 9, 2018

Tribute

“Well done good and faithful servant.
Welcome to the house of the Lord.”
Hanna, Dr. A.E.T. (Tom), 92, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. Tom was very dedicated and committed to all events that made this world a better place. Born in Vancouver, BC, March 2, 1926 to Alfred and Myrtle (nee Hunt) Hanna. He is predeceased by his parents and two older siblings; brother Robert J P Hanna and sister Ellanor C P (Peg) Colquhoun (nee Hanna). He was a proud husband, father and grandfather and leaves behind to mourn his loss, his wife of 59 years Dian, his children Jim (Sarah) and Michele (Robert); grandchildren Dalen, Everett, Jacob, Jesse, Nicole and Alannah; niece Ann (Ronald).
Tom was a veteran having served in the army during the second world war. Professionally he was a Chiropractor, graduating in the second class out of the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto Ont. on May 17, 1950. On his return he set up a practice in downtown Vancouver. After 5 years and in a time when chiropractors were considered witch doctors, Tom closed his practice to work at the White Spot and help his family after his father had suffered a stroke and could no longer work. This is when Tom met Dian and they were married on Sept 19, 1959. In 1961 Tom and family moved to Victoria to be the first manager of the White Spot at the Town & Country Shopping Centre. Tom was the owner of Poco Pizza, the Food & Beverage Manager of The Princess Mary Restaurant Vessel and after retirement returned to Turners Dental Lab as a denturist. Family always came first with Tom and he enjoyed outings on their boat, the many camping trips from one end of the island to the other, oh and if there was a moment that he could steal away and sit in the sun, he would so be there, gardening or in the back yard building his ‘great wall of China’. He served the Masonic community in many capacities as Worshipful Master of Camosun Lodge #60 and Worthy Patron in the Eastern Star. He was a devoted Shriner, member of the Janizaries marching unit, The Gizeh Legion of Honor and a member of the Shriners R.V. Club, spending many a happy trip in his and Dian’s R.V. He was an active member holding several important offices in The Royal Arch Masons and associated bodies, including The Red Cross of Constantine. The family has tremendous gratitude for the support and kindness Dad received from the doctors and nurses at Lions Gate Hospital and from the staff at Evergreen House. A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Paul’s, Naval and Garrison Church, 1379 Esquimalt Rd, Esquimalt, BC on Friday, December 7, 2018 at 2:00pm with a reception to follow. Donations may be made in Tom’s memory to: Shriners Hospital for Children(CANADA). https://www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org/montreal/ways-to-give

Dr. Tom was my parents constant dinner companion while they resided at The Renaissance Retirement home for about a year over 2017 so we were fortunate to get to know them closely over this daily ritual. Dian and Tom were very welcoming and had a good sense of humour as well as compassion; I often spent meals with my parents and Mr and Mrs Hanna. Tom was a kind and giving soul who sometimes vocalised as he could to my parents and I about his feelings, his mood and his opinion about the dinner. Tom influenced my desire to learn about /contribute to the Vancouver Island Masonic community as he/Dian were so active and cared so much about the Shriners Hospital for Children(CANADA) charity. I am grateful for this valuable life lesson and gift. I remember Tom happily sun-baking in the rose garden and being such a gentleman.

Relation: Employee at White Spot #16

Dear Dian, and “Jamie” as we knew you then: Great memories of Tommy, my boss at the “Spot” every summer for 4 years in the 1960’s. He was always fair and calm and patient with us employees, many of whom were still teenagers at the time. Wife Beverley joins in sending our sincere sympathy.

Relation: We were friends for Life

Trudie and I send our condolences to you Dian and family.
As you are aware Tom is the reason we moved to Vancouver Island which was to be for 1 summer. We became fast friends for life and are saddened to learn of his passing. He was a wonderful mentor and set an example to the community in all his endeavours of how patience and tolerance perseveres and wins the day. He will be missed by all especially in the Masonic community. Don & Trudie
