Tribute

KARA MAUREEN BOURNE

JUNE 7, 1980 – AUGUST 22, 2018

“Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes, because for those who love with their heart and souls, there is no such thing as separation” -Rumi

Our beloved Kara passed away Aug. 22, in Surrey Memorial Hospital.

From Kara’s earliest days, she displayed a curiosity and determination that was remarkable in someone so young. Dance classes, sports, arts and crafts, swimming, singing, writing music, horseback riding, were all things she embraced with passion and learned with ease.

Kara’s greatest pride & joy were her children, Rayfe and Kaiya.  They were the lights of her life and she loved them fiercely. She could experience being a kid, all over again, with her kids, and any occasion, such as Christmas, Easter, Halloween, was cause for decorating (everything), and much celebration. Her enthusiasm for these special occasions knew no bounds, and she carried them away to magical places with her creative spirit and joyful energy.

Family was important to Kara, and she loved all the family gatherings.  While she was growing up, we would have some of these gatherings at our house. These were exciting days and she would help clean up the house, and then she would fret about what she would wear, trying on every piece of clothing she owned before deciding on the outfit that she felt was suitable to the occasion. She would love organizing the activities for the day/night, with much enthused support from her Grandma Oshiro.  They were 2 peas in a pod, and it is a comfort, to us, to know that they are together, now, along with her Grandpa Oshiro, and Granny and Grandpa Bourne.  We know they were waiting to greet her when she made her last journey.

The family wishes to thank all the people that supported Kara, and us, through difficult times.  Kara had a large extended family in the Recovery Community, who were dear to her heart, and ours. Thank you to Peak House. The love and support shown to Kara and our family during her time, there, will never be forgotten. Special thanks to Shimai House (Deena & Stephanie) and Little House (Renu) and all the wonderful staff and residents who loved and supported her over the last couple years.

Kara leaves behind her beloved children, Rayfe and Kaiya and their father Alex McDonald, her mom, dad and brothers (Ramona, Steve, Nick and Craig), Aunts and Uncles, Kim, Paula, Doug, Pam, Rob, Larry, June, Maureen, Graeme. Cousins, Emily, Phil, Chloe, Kevin, Shayleen, Janna, Matthew and many more. Dear friends, Tara, Val, Michelle, Holly and many more. Her God Mother June, and honorary cousins Melissa and Shaun. Dear and supportive mother and father in-law Lois and Dennis.

RIP our dearest Kara.  You are loved.

In honour of Kara, there will be a Celebration of Life @ Bakerview – 34863 Cemetery Ave. Mission, B.C. Saturday – September 15 – 1:00 – 4:00.

From: June Saito
Relation: cousin to mother

I cannot honestly say Kara was a beautiful person; simply because I did not have the privilege of knowing her—but I am a mother of a daughter. Any daughter is a priceless treasure. If I were to lose that daughter—I have no words to tell you how sorry I am, Ramona. I wish I could just give you a big hug and cry with you.
Your Cousin,

I went to Peak House with Kara. Her Vicky and I became fast friends. She was always so kind, fun and so easy to talk to. I remember her beautiful singing voice when she would sing Bobby McGee she sounded just like Janice Joplin! I’m so sorry for your loss Ramona, Kara’s children and family.

*Godspeed* my beautiful niece.
I will always hold dear in my heart the memory of staying up late into the early morning hours with you, talking and drinking strawberry and blueberry tea. Both of us night owls.
Your Spirit, filled with intelligence, sensitivity, strength, creativity, kindness, humour and elegance will be your parting gift to remain in our hearts forever.
I keep remembering a time when you were about 4 yrs. old. You were looking up at the sky and asked me if I believed that Care Bears are really hidden in the clouds. I answered, “Yes.”
Now you are surrounded in love by Care Bears of all shapes, colours and sizes.

From: Tara Elaine Burnett
Relation: Friend

Kara was my friendship soulmate, my dearest friend. We met when we were in our early teens, and as our friends from Cloverdale could attest to, it was rare to see one of us without the other. We even coined the word “Katataka”, the first letters of our names combined, to express our bond. I wanted “Takakata” but Kara engraved “Katataka” on a keychain, solidifying the term forever. Kara’s mom, Ramona, said we had “the fire” and that often meant that one of us would have to back down if we didn’t see eye to eye, or there was probably going to be a small war. Usually it was me that gave in, because Kara’s drive was intensely fierce. If she wanted something, she was going to get it. This was one of her greatest strengths. She was the friend I had that was willing to go to battle for me, and she fought tirelessly for the youth she helped when she was working as an addictions counsellor. People were fortunate to have her in their lives.

I lost contact with Kara for a few years in our early 20s. When we reconnected, we talked about how neither of us had been able to form strong bonds with our other girlfriends. One of Kara’s counsellors had commented that Kara had “pigeon-holed” me as her best friend, and that she needed to let go of me. But this counsellor didn’t know us. We had something special that not many people get to experience in this lifetime. We knew each other so well. A lot of the time when I was with her, I felt like I was hanging out with myself. Kara was my teacher, my closest confidante, and she truly loved me unconditionally. That’s rare.

Kara had an amazing sense of style, and I will really miss shopping and sushi with her, raiding each other’s closets, and getting dressed up to go out on the town.

During Kara’s time on this earth, she was generous, kind, loving, driven, successful, compassionate, and good at everything she did. My grief is deep and my heart goes out to her family, whom I also love dearly.

Relation: Childhood friends

Kara was my first true girl friend. We were fast friends, the kind you meet are immediately at ease. We made that awkward transition from childhood into our teens together and we had many mischievous adventures at one another side. She was passionate, talented, and fiercely loyal. If she deemed you worthy she would be there for you at her own peril if that is what it took. Kara and I have not been in touch for awhile. None the less I am missing my friend. My thoughts are with her loving and devoted family.

Relation: Her Mom's cousin

I am so sorry for everyone’s loss. I only met Kara a couple of times. She was a beautiful young woman, whose life ended far to soon. I hope that memories of her will sustain you and in time, can only smile when thinking of her.
